AHIMSA ELEPHANT HAVEN (AEH)

“Ahimsa” means non-violence. Grounded in non-violence towards all beings, AEH will rehabilitate captive elephants by engaging the Adivasi tribal communities and harnessing their ancient wisdom through participatory action research (PAR). AEH will provide safe and natural settings, physical and mental enrichment, and a dignified life for these regal animals until they are released in the wild or they die.  This pilot phase of the project, aims to create the first chain-free elephant transition center in Kerala and rehabilitate one captive bull on a 2-acre-plot near the forest fringes between Malappuram and Palakkad districts, followed by creating native and endemic nurseries.

Currently, even elephants confiscated from their owners due to unimaginable abuse and neglect are shackled 24-7 at government-run elephant camps, where the substrate on which elephants are forced to stand causes foot-rot, resulting in untimely deaths. Mud baths are unavailable at these camps, but necessary to protect elephants’ skin, as they peel off pests when the mud dries, preventing skin diseases. Whereas, AEH is a chain-free elephant care center that will provide semi-natural settings, including the mud baths.
