We must ask ourselves: What kind of society are we building? One where voices are real but hearts are absent? One where machines simulate emotion but people forget how to feel?
As India accelerates its digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) is being woven into the fabric of healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. The promise is dazzling: a smarter, more efficient, and globally competitive India. Yet, beneath this glittering surface lies a growing shadow.
The Bright Side: AI in Conservation
AI has shown promise in conservation efforts. For instance, organizations like Voices for Asian Elephants are using AI-powered EleSense technology to detect elephants near train tracks and alert authorities, preventing fatal collisions. This showcases AI’s potential to protect biodiversity and promote coexistence.
The Darker Side: Voice Cloning and Deepfakes
AI is being misused in India to conduct fraud using voice cloning and deepfake videos. Cases include cybercriminals impersonating figures like N. R. Narayana Murthy and Mukesh Ambani to defraud people of lakhs of rupees.
In a country where oral communication is emotionally charged and culturally significant, voice-based deception deeply violates trust. The implications are especially dangerous in regions with low digital literacy but high smartphone use.
AI and Cybersecurity Threats
India, with over 900 million projected internet users by 2025, is becoming more vulnerable to AI-driven cyberattacks. Reports from CERT-In indicate a 300% rise in such incidents. AI tools can now scan and breach systems in seconds.
Critical infrastructure—such as Aadhaar, financial networks, and electoral platforms—could be compromised. With data protection laws still evolving, poor and rural populations are especially at risk.
Emotional Disconnection in the Age of AI
AI is being deployed in classrooms, call centers, and banks, increasing efficiency but also eroding human empathy. A farmer in Odisha, greeted by a bot instead of a caring voice, loses trust.
Loneliness is on the rise in India, and AI companions may fill emotional voids, but they also reinforce them. Human warmth, emotional labor, and interpersonal connection are being replaced by algorithms.
Economic Impact: Job Losses and Inequality
India’s young workforce, once seen as a strength, is at risk. AI threatens 69% of jobs over the next two decades, especially in roles like content creation, logistics, and retail.
Mid- and low-skilled workers are most vulnerable. With little reskilling support or social security, we may inadvertently build a digital caste system—where a few write the algorithms, and the rest are excluded.
A Call for Ethical Leadership and Human Values
India needs urgent digital regulations, AI literacy in schools, and grassroots awareness campaigns. But more than that, we need a moral reckoning.
AI is not just a tech issue—it’s about identity, emotion, trust, and values. We must ask: are we building a future where machines remember, but people forget how to feel?
This is not a rejection of AI—it’s a plea to humanize its use.
Because AI cannot cradle a crying child. It cannot sense hesitation in a loved one’s voice. It cannot see the pain behind a forced smile.
Only we can do that. And we must—before we forget how.
