Across Odisha’s once-continuous forests, the pathways elephants have followed for generations are collapsing. What were once living corridors—arteries of movement, memory, and migration—are now broken by development, encroachment, and deadly, illegal electric fencing. And elephants are paying the ultimate price with their lives for problems caused by humans.
Between 2024 and 2025 alone, Odisha has lost more than 100 elephants, a tragic number that reflects a wider national emergency. India’s latest elephant census reveals a staggering 25% decline across the country in the past eight years, leaving just 912 elephants in Odisha. As their habitats shrink and age-old routes disappear, herds are pushed into unfamiliar and dangerous terrain. They search for food and water in fragmented landscapes, only to encounter fatal fences, live wires, and human settlements ill-equipped to coexist with them.

But there is hope—real, tangible, immediate hope.
Voices for Asian Elephants (VFAE), together with Indigenous conservationists and tribal people, is restoring over 50 acres of critical land to rebuild safe, contiguous forest corridors. These are not symbolic patches of land; they are lifelines. Restored habitat gives elephants room to move freely, maintain family bonds, access water sources, and safely navigate between forests without risking electrocution or conflict.
This Giving Tuesday, your support can reopen the routes they have walked for millennia. Through GlobalGiving, your contribution up to $2,500 will be multiplied, with every contribution fuelling on-the-ground restoration and rewilding through community partnerships. It is a win-win situation, empowering the tribal people through sustainable livelihoods, and incentivizing them to protect Odisha’s remaining herds.
You too can help reopen their future, step by step. Act now through GlobalGiving:https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/securing-rewilding-corridors-for-odisha-elephants/
Rewilding a corridor does more than save elephants—it restores balance to an entire ecosystem. Healthy elephant pathways regenerate forests, disperse seeds, nurture biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. Each acre revived helps safeguard not just a species, but the integrity of the land itself.
